Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel’s industry’s pioneering SMART pre paid package, continues to pave the way for others to follow as it recently unveiled its latest SMART tariff structure. Launched in 2006, the SMART pre paid revolution spearheaded Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel’s effort, to position itself as the Operator with the lowest call rates of the local mobile telecom landscape offering an enhanced value proposition to its customers.
The new SMART tariff offers Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel customers to talk to each other at Rs. 1 per minute and SMS one another at a rate of 10 cents per message. SMART customers communicating with subscribers on other networks will be charged Rs. 2 per minute for voice calls and 25 cents per SMS message.
Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel SMART subscribers, who continue to enjoy mobile browsing and value added services, will to do so at a GPRS fee of 1 cent per 5kB block. (All rates are subject to government taxes and levies, with some conditions being applied).
This novel tariff structure will be communicated to the general public via an exciting integrated communication campaign, featuring Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel, Brand Ambassador, Lahiru Perera.
Lahiru, a renowned artist, with a youthful exuberance and talent, comes forward as Mobitel’s latest ambassador of the brand and together with Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel, he will front a national marketing effort that will reach out across the island.

Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel, the National Mobile Service Provider and the Official Sponsor of the National Cricket Team, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sri Lanka Telecom. In January 2004, the company launched its fully-fledged 2.5G GSM network that is EDGE/GPRS enabled and designed to operate on dual band. In December 2007, the company launched its 3.5G HSPA network - the first Super 3.5G network in South Asia. Further, Mobitel successfully demonstrated HSPA + MIMO technology with down link speed up to 28.8 mbps for the first time in the South Asian region. Investments committed to date in the 3.5G/2.5G networks and service offering amounts to over US$300 mn. The company plans to increase its combined number of base stations to 3000 by the end of 2010.
